Andrew Dowd

Andrew Dowd was born and raised in Rochester New York and been an Oregon resident since July 2000. He grew up in a home where classical music was always on. Andrew’s father was an instrumental music teacher in the Rochester public schools whose primary instrument was violin. Andrew took an interest in music around the age of 8 or 9 when he took acoustic (upright) bass lessons from his dad and continued to play classical music on acoustic bass through young adulthood. Andrew was a bassist and member of the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra from 1982 to 1985. Andrew’s love for jazz began during his junior year of high school when he took a class in jazz history. One requirement of the class was to attend regular Friday evening free concerts by the Eastman Jazz Ensemble at the Eastman Theater in Rochester. From that day forward, Andrew was Hooked on Jazz!!!

Andrew’s first venture into jazz radio was in 1995 when he was offered a weekly Monday night jazz show on WGMC 90.1 FM in Rochester New York and continued this weekly show until early 2000. In 2009 when Portland Oregon’s jazz station KMHD was moving from Mt. Hood Community College to Oregon Public Broadcasting Andrew had an opportunity to make a return to jazz broadcasting. He hosted a 6 AM to 9 AM show for several months from late 2009 to early 2010 when he was offered the chance to host a new Saturday evening jazz show called The Gold Standard.
